In June 2025, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)-International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Joint Seminar on Sustainable Laboratory Infrastructure was successfully held at the UNIDO headquarters in Vienna. More than 100 government representatives, standards bodies and experts from international organizations from more than 30 countries participated online to discuss the sustainable development path of laboratory infrastructure.

At the seminar, representatives from China, India, Australia, Armenia, Switzerland, Belgium, Brazil, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Uganda and other countries delivered keynote speeches, providing important insights. Some highlights are as follows:

The representative of Siemens Switzerland AG’s perspective on integrating smart technologies and modular design into laboratory infrastructure , offering practical guidance for stakeholders working in the context of developing countries;
The detailed account of BIS’s large-scale digitization of laboratory operations—especially the implementation of an integrated Laboratory Information Management System across hundreds of testing facilities by the representative of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS),offering practical guidance for institutions aiming to modernize laboratory infrastructure and enhance efficiency through digital innovation.
The reflections from the representative of Brazil’s SCiTec Testing and Certification Company on aligning laboratory initiatives with national regulatory and environmental objectives—especially through coordinated engagement in technical committees and the development of Brazil’s new standard for water testing Laboratories,offering practical guidance for those advancing laboratory and healthcare quality systems in support of long-term development and innovation.
The strategic perspective of the representative from the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS) on aligning biobank development with Egypt’s national priorities—emphasizing inter-institutional collaboration, capacity building, and sustainability,offering practical guidance for organizations striving to enhance laboratory quality infrastructure in resource-constrained and multi-country settings.
The reflections on the challenges and achievements of regional digital transformation in West Africa’s accreditation landscape—especially the integration of remote assessment and training tools to reduce costs and expand access by the representative of the West African Accreditation System (SOAC WAAS),offering practical guidance for organizations striving to enhance laboratory quality infrastructure in resource-constrained and multi-country settings.
The thorough presentation of the multi-layer digital transformation framework—highlighted by the Tanzanian Bureau of Standards’ innovative application of data governance to align metrology with broader laboratory management by the representative of the Brazilian Institute of Technical Standards (ABNT),provided valuable, practical insights for institutions and professionals striving to modernize quality infrastructure in emerging economies.
The representative’s from the Guangzhou National Laboratory the vision of smart laboratories—redefining traditional workflows through automation, robotics, and data-centric design,offered practical guidance for those working to future-proof laboratory environments through intelligent, human–machine collaborative systems.

Many participants appreciated the diversity and depth of perspectives presented throughout the event.
